Dice

Cubic dice appear in archaeological finds across ancient Eurasia and North Africa. Games that total two or three dice — and wagers on odd/even or ranges — are among the oldest documented forms of chance play.

Playing cards

Playing cards reached Europe from Asia by the late Middle Ages. Regional decks and trump games evolved into families that later produced poker, blackjack (a relative of earlier “vingt-et-un” style games) and numerous patience / solitaire variants.

Roulette

Roulette took shape in Europe; the single-zero wheel associated with “European” roulette is distinct from the double-zero American layout. The wheel’s pockets and table bet types (inside and outside) became standard casino vocabulary in the nineteenth century.

Early slot machines

Mechanical trade stimulators and three-reel machines appeared in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the United States. Later electromechanical and then fully electronic video slots replaced gears with random number generators and digital reels — the lineage behind modern five-reel games.

Scratch cards

Latex-covered lottery scratch tickets became widespread in the late twentieth century as a retail lottery product. Digital scratch-style games borrow the reveal gesture without being lottery tickets.
